The Silver maple (Acer saccharinum) is a sprawling, picturesque large tree that produces yellow-red flowers. They appear in March. The Silver maple also has light green leaves. Its bark is silver-grey and longitudinally furrowed. In a sunny to semi-shady, wind-protected location with nutrient-rich, moist to wet soil, it usually reaches a height of approx. 20 metres and grows to a width of approx. 20 metres.

Growth

Silver maple is a sprawling, picturesque large tree. It usually reaches a height of 15 - 20 m and is approx. 12 - 20 m wide. As a rule, it grows 40 - 50 cm per year.

Shoots

The shoots of Acer saccharinum are red-brown in colour.

Leaves

The deciduous leaves of the Silver maples are light green, opposite, lobed. They are about 10 - 15 cm in size. Silver maple turns bright yellow-orange in autumn.

Bark

Silver-grey, longitudinally furrowed bark makes this plant an eye-catcher in any garden.

Flower

The yellow-red flowers appear in March.

Root

Acer saccharinum is a shallow-rooting plant and, depending on the soil, forms roots close to the surface.

Location

Preferred location in a sunny to semi-shady, wind-protected position.

The Silver maple has good frost hardiness.

The plant needs plenty of water. Do not allow the soil to dry out.

Care

- Pruning and sawing wounds as well as broken branches should be treated with a wound sealant as soon as possible to prevent pathogens from entering the plant.
- Pruning should never be carried out in spring: The wounds bleed very heavily, weakening the tree.

Planting time

Container plants can be planted all year round, except when the soil is frozen and in summer heat (over 30°C).
