The Field Maple (Acer campestre) is an upright, broad large shrub or small tree that produces greenish-yellow flowers arranged in panicles. They appear in May. These produce brown winged fruits from August. The Field Maple also has dark green leaves. In a sunny to semi-shady location with well-drained, calcareous, nutrient-rich soil, it usually reaches a height of around 15 metres and grows to a width of around 10 metres.

Europe to North Africa.

Growth

Field Maple is an upright and broad-growing large shrub or small tree. It usually reaches a height of 5 - 15 m and is approx. 5 - 10 m wide. As a rule, it grows 40 - 50 cm per year.

Leaves

The deciduous leaves of the Field Maples are dark green, opposite, lobed. They are about 5 - 10 cm in size. Field Maple turns bright orange-yellow in autumn.

Flower

The greenish-yellow flowers of Field Maple appear in panicles in May.

Root

Acer campestre is a heartroot and, depending on the soil, forms finely branched roots.

Location

Preferred location in a sunny to semi-shady position.

Frost hardiness

The Field Maple has good frost hardiness.

Normal soil.

Use

Solitary, privacy screen, hedge (pruning)

Water

The plant has a medium water requirement.

Care

Cut and saw wounds as well as broken branches should be treated with a wound dressing as soon as possible to prevent pathogens from entering the plant.

Pruning

This plant is tolerant of pruning.

Planting time

Container plants can be planted all year round, except when the soil is frozen and in summer heat (over 30°C).
