The Red maple (Acer rubrum) is a cone-shaped tree that produces dark red flowers. They appear from March to April. The Red maple also has dark green leaves. Its bark is grey. In a sunny location with lime-free, nutrient-rich, moist to wet, weakly acidic soil, it usually reaches a height of around 15 metres and grows to a width of around 10 metres.

Growth

Red maple is a conical growing tree with a closed crown. It usually reaches a height of 10 - 15 m and is approx. 6 - 10 m wide. It usually grows 30 - 40 cm per year.

Shoots

The shoots of Acer rubrum are red.

Leaves

The deciduous leaves of Red maple are dark green, opposite, lobed. They are about 6 - 10 cm in size. Red maple is bright orange-yellow to red in autumn.

Bark

Grey bark makes this plant an eye-catcher in any garden.

Flower

The dark red flowers appear from March to April.

Root

Acer rubrum is a heartroot and, depending on the soil, forms finely branched roots.

Location

Preferred location in a sunny position.

The Red maple has good frost hardiness.

The plant needs plenty of water. Do not allow the soil to dry out.

Care

Cut and saw wounds as well as broken branches should be treated with a wound dressing as soon as possible to prevent pathogens from entering the plant.

Container plants can be planted all year round, except when the soil is frozen and in summer heat (over 30°C).
