The Norway maple (Acer platanoides) is a dense, roundish large tree that produces greenish-yellow flowers arranged in corymbs. They appear in April. These produce brown winged fruits. The Norway maple also has medium green leaves. Its bark is dark grey and longitudinally furrowed. In a sunny to semi-shady location, it usually reaches a height of around 30 metres and is around 22 metres wide. The Norway maple makes no special demands on the soil.

Growth

Norway maple is a dense and roundish growing large tree. It usually reaches a height of 20 - 30 m and is approx. 15 - 22 m wide. As a rule, it grows 40 - 60 cm per year.

Shoots

The shoots of Acer platanoides are light brown in colour.

Leaves

The deciduous leaves of Norway maple are medium green, opposite, toothed, lobed. They are about 15 - 20 cm tall. Norway maple is bright golden yellow in autumn.

Bark

Dark grey, longitudinally furrowed bark makes this plant an eye-catcher in any garden.

Flower

The greenish-yellow flowers of Norway maple appear in corymbs in April.

Root

Acer platanoides is a heartroot and, depending on the soil, forms finely branched roots.

Location

Preferred location in a sunny to semi-shady position.

Frost hardiness

The Norway maple has good frost hardiness.
