The Moosewood (Acer pensylvanicum) is a loose, multi-stemmed small tree that produces light yellow flowers arranged in clusters. They appear in May. These produce light brown winged fruits. The Moosewood also has dark green leaves. Its bark is green-white, striped and smooth. In a sunny to shady location with well-drained, loose, acidic soil, it usually reaches a height of around 9 metres and grows to around 6 metres wide.

Growth

Moosewood is a small tree that grows loosely and in several trunks. It usually reaches a height of 6 - 9 m and is approx. 3 - 6 m wide. As a rule, it grows 20 - 25 cm per year.

Leaves

The deciduous leaves of the Moosewoods are dark green, opposite, lobed. They are about 12 - 18 cm in size. Moosewood turns bright yellow in autumn.

Bark

Green-white, striped, smooth bark makes this plant an eye-catcher in any garden.

Flower

The light yellow flowers of Moosewood appear in clusters in May.

Root

Acer pensylvanicum is a shallow-rooted plant and, depending on the soil, forms finely branched roots.

Location

Preferred location in a sunny to shady position.

Frost hardiness

The Moosewood has good frost hardiness.

Soil

Acer pensylvanicum thrives on all acidic, humus-rich and sufficiently moist soils.

Cut and saw wounds as well as broken branches should be treated with a wound dressing as soon as possible to prevent pathogens from entering the plant.

Container plants can be planted all year round, except when the soil is frozen and in summer heat (over 30°C).
