Japanese maple 'Atropurpureum' is a spreading, wide-growing, picturesque large shrub. It usually reaches a height of 3 - 4 m and is approx. 3 - 4 m wide. It usually grows 30 - 50 cm per year.

High leaf ornamental value. The deciduous leaves of the Japanese maple 'Atropurpureum's are purple-red, deeply slit and opposite. They are about 6 - 11 cm in size. Japanese maple 'Atropurpureum' turns bright red in autumn.

Smooth bark.

The purple-red flowers of the Japanese maple 'Atropurpureum' appear in clusters in May.

Acer palmatum 'Atropurpureum' is a shallow-rooted plant and, depending on the soil, forms finely branched roots.

Preferred location in a sunny to semi-shady, wind-protected position.

The Japanese maple 'Atropurpureum' has good frost hardiness.

Normal soil.

The plant has a medium water requirement.

- Cut and saw wounds as well as broken branches should be treated with a wound sealant as soon as possible to prevent pathogens from entering the plant.
- Frozen shoots are cut back to the healthy wood as soon as there is no longer any risk of frost.

No pruning is necessary for this plant.

Container plants can be planted all year round, except when the soil is frozen and in summer heat (over 30°C).
