The Silver birch (Betula pendula) is a slender, overhanging, picturesque large tree that produces greenish-yellow flowers arranged in catkins. They appear from March to April. The Silver birch also has triangular, diamond-shaped, light green leaves. Its bark is white, rolling. In a sunny location, it usually reaches a height of around 30 metres and is around 12 metres wide. The Silver birch makes no special demands on the soil.

Europe to Caucasus.

Growth

Silver birch is a slender, overhanging, picturesque large tree with a loose crown. It usually reaches a height of 18 - 30 m and is approx. 7 - 12 m wide. As a rule, it grows 35 - 45 cm per year.

Leaves

The deciduous leaves of the Silver birch are light green, triangular, diamond-shaped, alternate, coarsely serrated. They are about 3 - 7 cm in size. Silver birch turns a bright golden yellow in autumn.

Bark

White, rolling bark makes this plant an eye-catcher in any garden.

Flower

The greenish-yellow flowers of Silver birch appear in catkins from March to April. These grow to around 5 cm in size.

Root

Betula pendula is a heartroot and, depending on the soil, forms finely branched roots.

Location

Preferred location in a sunny position.

The Silver birch has good frost hardiness.
