The Downy birch (Betula pubescens) is a large, roundish tree that produces pale yellow flowers arranged in catkins. They appear from April to May. The Downy birch also has egg-shaped, dark green leaves. Its bark is grey, rolling. In a sunny location, it usually reaches a height of around 20 metres and grows to a width of around 12 metres. The Downy birch makes no special demands on the soil.

Growth

Downy birch is a roundish growing large tree. It usually reaches a height of 10 - 20 m and is approx. 8 - 12 m wide.

Leaves

The deciduous leaves of the Downy birch are dark green, egg-shaped. They are about 3 - 5 cm in size. Downy birch turns bright yellow in autumn.

Bark

Grey, rolling bark makes this plant an eye-catcher in any garden.

Flower

The light yellow flowers of Downy birch appear in catkins from April to May.

Fruit

The cones of Betula pubescens appear from August. The young cones are light yellow in colour.

Root

Betula pubescens is a heartroot and, depending on the soil, forms finely branched roots.
