The Front Door as a Business Card – Decoration in the Winter Season

Autumn is over, and winter has arrived. Only a few trees and shrubs still have a few leaves, and they are withered. However, it is now the time for evergreen plants. They are ready to be adorned with pre-Christmas string lights and shine in full glory. Now, it's time for the front door decoration to adjust. The colorful autumn arrangement must say goodbye. But what will replace it?

Of course, a wreath is not only the first idea but also generally a great choice. It always fits and just needs to be hung on the nail. There are so many variations that each piece is truly unique and can even match the style of the front door. If you want to be absolutely sure, you can make it yourself. Whether made from fir branches from your own garden, purchased boxwood, or gifted arborvitae, a wreath allows you to add your personal touch with special decorations. The easiest way is to buy a wreath that provides the base. Everything else can be added to it. Many materials are available as a foundation, from natural options like grapevine and willow twigs to artificial greenery. Fans of clear, simple shapes can keep it minimal with a plain wreath made from extraordinary materials like willow with mistletoe branches or twigs. Cover a small area with moss here and there and add a few nut shells—voilà, the winter decoration is complete. Want something a bit more Christmas-y but still elegant with a touch of shine? Then let stars rain down on your round model! Silver and gold, large and small, two- and three-dimensional—every combination creates a unique picture and depends solely on your personal taste.

The classic fir tree wreath is often decorated with large pine cones and red ribbons. However, even such a simple element as a wreath leaves no limits to creativity. Those who prefer a rustic style might choose small wooden figures, bark carvings, as well as apples and berries. The romantic style, on the other hand, might favor combinations of golden baubles, delicate angel figures, and plenty of sparkling artificial snow, while those who love the country house style may opt for colorful ribbons and add a few woolen gnomes or felt Christmas figures. Or would you prefer something modern? Glass balls, reindeer and stags made of shiny metal, and pearl garlands create a striking combination.

However, it doesn't necessarily have to be a wreath. A floral arrangement is just as beautiful and no less impactful. Fans of upcycling philosophy and vintage lovers, for example, can let their imagination run wild. Old household items or discarded clothing can serve as the basis for winter door decorations. Metal hangers can hold bells, cans can be covered in jute and filled with Christmas ornaments. Grandma's old Christmas baubles with the faded spots and the wooden horses that have lost their paint are worth taking down from the attic. These are the perfect additions for a shabby-chic arrangement made of thick cord. Especially crafty homeowners might create a beautiful motif. Reindeer and Santa Clauses can be made from fir, spruce, and arborvitae. Just don't forget the red hat!

Often, there is some space next to the front door. A large vase with branches, big ornaments, and cotton snowflakes always works. Or do you have an old children's sled lying around? It can be used as a display for winter-hardy plants like heather, small arrangement pieces, pinecones, and figurines. Just drape everything nicely, overlapping and beside each other, and add a bow here and there. The guest will be greeted with a warm welcome right at the front door, something that not everyone offers during the cold season.

The beauty of winter decoration is that it can be used both before and after the big holiday. Once the base is set, you only need to swap out the typical Christmas figures. The little Santa boots out, and small snowmen in their place. For winter decoration enthusiasts with little time, it’s a great idea to prepare a frost-resistant decoration and simply add a fitting inscription during the Advent season. What should it say? Of course, “Christmas.”
