The Lawn – Grass Green and Healthy All Around

Many garden owners are especially proud of their green and even lawn. However, to keep it green and healthy, a little work is required. After all, a perfect English lawn doesn’t just happen on its own.

While the establishment of the lawn area is crucial to the future health of the grass, maintenance truly makes the difference. Because only a well-maintained lawn is a healthy and green lawn.

The Perfect Lawn

Anyone who wants a green and perfect lawn should be aware that such a lawn requires much more maintenance than a wildflower meadow. But those who take good care of their lawn will be more than rewarded. With a green and dense carpet, it gives the garden a unique charm. Of course, it's always a matter of taste, as everyone has to decide for themselves how perfect their lawn should be. If you have children who play in the garden, you might be able to live with a dandelion or a daisy here and there. And a slightly overgrown lawn doesn't have to be unsightly. Even a lawn with wild residents can be lush and green, contributing to a lovely overall appearance. After all, perfection is always in the eye of the beholder.

The Path to the Perfect Lawn

To make sure the lawn looks good and is bursting with green, proper care is essential. But what does that look like? First and foremost, the path to a perfect lawn leads directly to the lawn mower. Careful mowing is key to a healthy and well-maintained lawn. From May to August, when the grass grows the fastest, regular mowing is necessary. The lawn should be mowed at least once a week during this time. However, it's especially important not to step on the lawn beforehand, as this allows all the blades to be cut evenly. Additionally, the lawn should only be mowed when it’s dry. Not only is it harder to mow wet grass, but mowing wet grass also promotes bacteria and fungi. The best time to mow the lawn is in the morning, after the dew has dried, or after sunset. Mowing should also be avoided when temperatures exceed 30°C, as this can cause burns on the cut edges and the lawn will turn brown. If brown patches do appear, regular watering and fertilizing will help. Additionally, mowing regularly helps prevent weeds from taking over.

It's All About the Length

How long should the perfect lawn be before it needs to be mowed again? If you can’t strictly adhere to mowing at least once a week, you should keep an eye on the grass length. If the grass blades are longer than 6 to 8 centimeters, it’s time to mow the lawn. Ideally, you should trim about a third of the grass blades when mowing. After mowing, the lawn should be about 4 to 5 centimeters long. Mowing the lawn too short can lead to moss and weed formation, which should be avoided at all costs. Additionally, when mowing, make sure the blades are sharp. This ensures a clean cut, preventing the grass from becoming ragged. Not only does this look unattractive, but it also damages the grass blades and can cause the lawn to dry out faster. Water the lawn less often, but more intensively. At least 10 liters per square meter is recommended.
