The Scent Garden: A lot to discover for keen noses

The garden is a retreat and a refuge from the stresses of everyday life. No wonder, then, that everyone wants to relax and feel comfortable in their garden. Intense scents that relax the senses bring special relaxation.

A scent garden can work wonders for stress. And it's not so difficult to bring the fragrant residents into your own garden and create your own little or large scent garden.

Planning is key

In order for not only the owners but also other garden inhabitants like birds, bees, butterflies, and bumblebees to feel comfortable in the new scent garden, some planning is necessary. Of course, one can simply plant fragrant plants in the bed, but with scent plants, the time of day is especially important. Not every plant releases its fragrance at the same time. Plants like angel's trumpet, evening primrose, and night jasmine only release their special scent late in the evening or even at night. Other plants like rosemary or mint need sunshine to release their aromatic essential oils and turn the garden into a fragrant oasis. Therefore, it's advisable to integrate plants into the scent garden that release their aromas early and those that release them later. This way, the scent garden will be a unique experience from morning to evening or even night.

Small scent wonders, big impact

As the saying goes, "Good things come in small packages," and this is definitely true for plants. Even small-growing plants can emit a special fragrance. To ensure that the scent doesn't get lost on the ground, flower baskets, trellises, raised beds, and hills work especially well. This gives the little scent wonders a well-deserved presentation. For those who prefer uniformity, planting several of the same kind in the scent garden works well. However, sometimes the charm lies in combining multiple aromas together. Above all, the plants in a scent garden should be chosen according to personal preference. What many people find pleasant may be unpleasant and disturbing to someone else. Therefore, the rule for plant selection is: always follow your nose! Plant what you like.

The choice between classics and exotics

When thinking about fragrant plants, classics like violets, roses, lavender, and lilies of the valley immediately come to mind. But what about shrubs and trees? What many don't realize is that, in the hot summer, pine and fir trees not only provide pleasant shade, but they also release a wonderful fragrance. Just like eucalyptus and amber, these trees offer both shade and a sensory experience. Of course, beloved kitchen herbs should not be missed in the scent garden: lemon balm, thyme, oregano, rosemary, and sage are just waiting for the warm summer sun to release their aromas. Complemented with wallflower, vanilla flower, and marigolds, the scent garden becomes something truly special.
