Flower Beds in Blue and Purple

Do you like the color blue? With its fresh radiance in lighter shades and calming effect in darker tones? Then add the magical purple, and a whole world of design possibilities will be at your feet.

**Light-Dark Contrasts in Flower Beds**

Just take a look at two examples. We let a dark purple clematis climb and pair it with a slightly lighter shrub veronica. When these two intertwine smoothly, we already have the perfect plant combination for a pavilion or pergola. Want to create a cozy little seating area? Pair large-flowered blue anemones with the romantic bellflower, add some ground-covering speedwell, and you’ll feel right at home in your garden nook.

When wild crocuses and garden crocuses find their way through the snow cover, the gardening year begins. Both come in heavenly shades of blue. Spring is welcomed with the blue starflower and the pasque flower. The blue grape hyacinth adds stunning accents to the bed. Its flowers look like they’re made of pearls. Only when you take a closer look can you see the open bell-shaped blooms. It’s a poem for bumblebees and bees and a dreamlike decoration for the vase! As a charming ground cover, the blue cushion plant is ready to take its place.

**Blue-Violet Sun Lovers**

Let’s imagine a blue-violet summer flower bed basking in the sun! In the center, a stately scabiosa stands out. Its graceful, bowl-shaped flowers are a source of delight for insects and joy for the observer. Be careful, visitors will surely want to sneak some into their living rooms! Around it, we drape ornamental allium, which has long been a colorful spherical addition to gardens. There is also sage as an ornamental plant, fitting perfectly with its spike-like flower candles in the arrangement. When the blue lupine on the edge of the bed loses its blooms, the vibrant spurge takes over. The balloon flower, with its truly balloon-like buds, prefers to wait until high summer before opening its flat, bell-shaped flowers. Then there is the impressive globe thistle for the background and the spectacular blue fescue for accents at the edge. It displays steel-blue stems, while the yellowish spikes sway in the summer breeze. For those who love the combination of beauty and healing power, deep blue hyssop is a perfect addition.

A small bed of colorful summer asters is always a highlight. The cheerful appearance remains even when you highlight the color blue, adding a touch of harmony. Of course, it’s the aster that dominates the bed in autumn. Bushy autumn asters top the list and enchant with their magnificent bloom. The question of which flowers will appear as indoor decor is already answered with them. When the crocus blooms, the first autumn storms are already sweeping across the land, and the autumn crocus ushers in the beginning of winter.

**Radiant Colors Even in the Shade**

What happens in the realm of shade? Among the ornamental allium varieties, there are wonderfully large specimens that love to live in partial shade. A true giant accompanies them in the form of wisteria, which couldn’t have a better name. This climbing plant outshines any background with its grand appearance. Hydrangeas feel at ease without constant sunlight, and delphiniums let their stunning blooms sprout as well. The blue-leaved hosta adds a remarkable foliage plant with voluminous leaves to the mix. The blue and violet symphony is completed with the iceland poppy.

When it comes to ornamental shrubs, the beloved lilac need not be further mentioned, as it’s an essential part of even the smallest gardens. The loveberry bush, however, is rarer. It may not win any floral awards with its flowers, but its time comes in the autumn. Unquestionably beautiful are its fruits, which envelop the low-maintenance shrub. The pearl-like berries, coated as if with lacquer, appear in a magical purple hue.

A bed in blue and violet is truly something special. It doesn't radiate in the same way as plants in yellow and red do. Its strength lies in inviting calmness and, like by magic, creating inner peace. Between soft blues and mystical violets, one can truly unwind. And if a fresh breeze between azure blue and delicate lilac is desired, simply add a few white plants. When in doubt, choose roses.
