The Iris – a plant beauty with many faces

No dedicated hobby gardener should miss out on an iris, as there is a suitable spot for this fantastic plant in every garden.

The iris displays wonderful colors and shapes. Its versatility makes it so popular, as the iris is perfect for every garden.

The Iris in a Spectrum of Colors

It is one of the most popular garden residents. Not without reason, the iris with its spectacular bloom received the title "Perennial of the Year 2016." The individual flowers present six petals. One half hangs down in a casual-elegant manner, while the other half reaches upwards, often in different colors. This creates a wide range of flair. The iris can show itself nobly in shades of blue or radiantly in the color palette from yellow to orange. In a white outfit, it fits wonderfully with its clear radiance in an all-white bed or complements the country house style.

The Iris with Companions

The iris comes in varieties ranging from small growth to a size of just over one meter. Most varieties prefer sun-drenched spots. Proper nutrient supply is ensured by compost or fertilizers with a high potassium content. There is essentially a place for this fantastic plant with many faces in every garden. Whether by the pond in combination with purple loosestrife or in the border in a lively rendezvous with daisies and delphiniums, the iris makes a beautiful display. Stunning in a miniature variety of about 15 centimeters in a rock garden and impressively extravagant with poppies! A must-have for the vase.

The Iris Through the Seasons

The blooming period of the iris varies depending on the variety, ranging from spring to midsummer. Wilted flowers should be removed. Some varieties reward a rigorous pruning with a second bloom. Always fertilize well at the start of the blooming season! When the flowers begin to fade, cut the rhizome so that each piece still has both leaves and roots, and replant everything. It is best to do this in midsummer. Otherwise, the iris is not demanding in terms of care and can survive our winters well in the ground.
