The Sound Garden: Wind Chimes and Co. Provide Relaxation

Your ambition doesn’t necessarily have to reach the level of artist Burkard Schmidl, who created the famous Sound Garden for the State Garden Exhibition in Würzburg in 1990 and has since achieved great success with his compositions. However, with a few beautiful installations, you can also integrate both aesthetics and sound into your garden, allowing yourself to be continually enchanted.

Sound experiences for young and old

Whether wind chimes or instruments that garden visitors can play themselves, there are many ways to bring sound into your garden. For example, you can create a parcours with several frames where different objects hang, each producing its own sound. A regular bicycle rim can become a rhythm instrument, and a hollow tree trunk can provide the tone. Various mallets offer endless new sound experiences.

Hanging metal bowls or discs, wooden pieces, and aluminum pipes can serve as xylophones, and playful chimes jingle in the wind. Even weather-resistant instruments like plastic recorders and similar items can expand your sound garden.

Such installations not only fascinate children, but adults also enjoy these experiences and often can’t get enough of them. Whether you prefer to create a small sound corner or feature the theme of sound in various places throughout your garden is a matter of personal taste.

Get inspired and experiment

If you’re feeling adventurous, you can even build your own drums, stretched with various materials. These can be played not only with mallets but perhaps also with water dripping onto them, giving them their own unique rhythm. Feel free to get creative, even if your idea seems a little unconventional.

Different types of paper that flutter softly in the wind can also contribute to the garden concert, and might even be a wonderful way to provide shade for a peaceful spot.

As you can see, the more you explore the theme, the more interesting and diverse it can become. Even carved pipes and flutes can be played, and they often produce a slightly altered sound when carried by the wind.
