The Roof Garden: A Paradise Above the Roofs of the World

Many dream of it, but only a few take the opportunity when it presents itself to create their dream garden on the roof.

Because, like no other type of garden, the roof garden offers you unlimited possibilities to let your creativity run wild. The only limitations here are the load-bearing capacity of your flat roof and possibly the input of your roommates.

Preparations

For this reason, you should have the structural integrity of the area you plan to design for your rooftop garden checked by a professional and assessed to see if it is suitable for your planned project. If everything is in order, you can proceed with obtaining the necessary permits and begin designing.

Please note

When selecting the elements to integrate into your rooftop garden, there are a few things to consider. First, clarify whether you can plant directly on the roof, and if so, how you need to protect the roof surface from moisture, pressure, and stress beforehand.

If you prefer to arrange the plants in movable pots and containers, it is advisable to place them on suitable saucers beforehand. For larger plants, make sure that no pressure points can develop on the surface underneath.

    • Plant Ideas**
If you have a less attractive railing on your rooftop terrace, you might want to spruce it up with climbing plants or use hanging pots to conceal it. Many annual and perennial flowering plants, such as the scarlet runner bean or nasturtiums, are perfect for planting in these pots and can even be harvested for the kitchen. Gorgeous blooms are produced by the black-eyed Susan, clematis, and star bindweed. Even though they are sometimes considered old-fashioned, climbing and hanging bindweed and vetches in all varieties grow abundantly and compete in beauty.

Many of these plants can be grown from seeds as early as February and then placed on the terrace starting in mid-May. Please make sure that your delicate plants are not exposed to the weather too harshly, so they don’t freeze or dry out.

Lavender, clematis, cinquefoil, and hydrangeas have proven to be grateful residents of roof terraces. Hop, too, climbs on many roof terraces year after year, providing a relaxing summer atmosphere with its earthy fragrance.

When selecting plants for your roof, you should ensure they can cope with the often extreme conditions. Many roof garden enthusiasts prefer grasses and green plants, as they handle wind, dryness, and direct sunlight well. However, many flowering plants appreciate some sun protection in the form of a sunshade or large plants that provide shade.
