The Feng Shui Garden: Botanical Harmony for Health

Good Living Conditions Through Harmonious Energy Flow

Have you ever thought about whether the energy flow in your garden is harmonious and balanced? You should, because according to Asian energy teachings, this is the foundation for a prosperous and successful life in all aspects. These life areas include material wealth, fame, a harmonious partnership, family, children, knowledge, career, and helpful friends. For these eight aspects of life, we must take responsibility just as much as for the central energy principle of Tai Chi, to make the best out of our lives.

Stagnation of Energy Means Illness

When there is stagnation in the energy flow of any of these aspects, it leads to an imbalance elsewhere, resulting in an excess or a deficiency. This causes imbalances that, in the worst case, can lead to illness and loss, according to the teachings of the Bagua.

However, there are design measures in the house and garden that can improve unfavorable conditions, helping the energy flow surrounding the garden’s residents to remain as powerful and even as possible. A good foundation for a harmonious Feng Shui garden is when its layout closely resembles a circle. Gardens that are round, square, or rectangular require little additional effort to ensure good energy flow. Very long or triangular plots need to be optimized. This can be done by enhancing the areas of the garden that feel "too short" with specific garden elements, both energetically and visually.

Your Garden Projected onto Your Life

This concept becomes clearer when you imagine a square grid projected onto your garden’s layout, divided into nine equal sections. Surrounding the central field, "Tai Chi," which represents life energy, are the other eight life aspects in the order mentioned above, with the garden entrance or house at the bottom. As you examine the resulting grid, you will notice that some sections are smaller and less favorable due to the shape of your garden. These areas now require your attention.

One of the fundamental principles of Feng Shui is to ensure that the energy flow is neither too fast nor too sharp, as this can cause harm. Therefore, it is advisable to soften edges, corners, and points using curved paths, oval water features, and by planting perennials and shrubs, redirecting the energy flow gently.
