The Black birch also has shiny, egg-shaped, medium green leaves. Its bark is black-brown, rolling. In a sunny to semi-shady location with well-drained, nutrient-rich, moist to wet soil, it usually reaches a height of approx. 20 metres and grows to a width of approx. 18 metres.

Black birch is a spreading, picturesque tree with a loose crown. It usually reaches a height of 12 - 20 m and is approx. 10 - 18 m wide. It usually grows 30 - 40 cm per year.

Leaves

The deciduous leaves of the Black birch are medium green, ovate, glossy and alternate. They are about 3 - 10 cm in size. Black birch turns bright yellow in autumn.

Bark

Black-brown, rolling bark makes this plant an eye-catcher in any garden.

Root

Betula nigra is a shallow-rooting plant and, depending on the soil, forms finely branched roots close to the surface.
