The Rhododendron – the Stylish Classic

The Rhododendron is one of the most popular flowering shrubs in gardens. While this makes it very famous, beauty and fame come at a price: the Rhododendron is also one of the most demanding flowering shrubs. However, many gardeners can’t and don’t want to do without it.

No wonder, because the Rhododendron is a real eye-catcher. And as early as the beginning of April, it shows its flowers, which can be admired in various colors. In fact, the range of flower colors is larger than that of roses.

Demanding Beauty

Rhododendrons are best planted in the spring right after the last frost. This gives the plants enough time to spread their roots and prepare for the winter. Depending on the weather, a Rhododendron can also be planted in early autumn. However, the most important factor for the Rhododendron is the soil, as it has very specific requirements. A key factor is that the Rhododendron needs lime-free soil. Therefore, if possible, it should be watered only with rainwater. If the tap water is relatively low in lime, it can be used as well. Additionally, the soil for the Rhododendron should be very loose and rich in humus to ensure optimal growth of the shrub.

Planting Rhododendron Correctly

For the Rhododendron to thrive in the garden, the soil should be mixed with compost and bark humus beforehand. In most regions, the natural soil composition is not sufficient for healthy growth. The Rhododendron must not be planted too deeply, and the soil above the root ball should be covered with a layer of leaves or compost. If the garden soil is dense, a Rhododendron can still be planted by loosening the soil with lime-free gravel. Modern cultivars are much more tolerant of the existing soil conditions than they used to be. This is one of the reasons why the Rhododendron is such a popular garden plant.

Proper Care Makes the Difference

If you have a Rhododendron in your garden, you should consider having a rainwater barrel. Rhododendrons should only be watered with rainwater. This is not only better for the plant but also kinder to your wallet, and the plant will reward you with healthy growth and beautiful flowers. To encourage the formation of new blooms, old and faded flowers should be removed immediately. They can be easily broken off. A fertilization in spring prepares the Rhododendron perfectly for the new garden year and promotes healthy growth. In general, Rhododendrons don't require pruning, but older ones can benefit from a trim to help them regain their shape.
