October – Planting Time for Roses

The rose, the classic among flowers, should not be missing in any garden. The wide variety ensures that there is the right rose bush for every location and taste.

Bare-root plants

These roses, which are bought with bare roots rather than in pots, are available in spring and autumn. Most experts recommend planting them in autumn, as they can gather strength before the first year and the roots can establish themselves well before the strong frosts. In spring, they then sprout earlier than freshly planted ones.
Additionally, plants purchased in spring are already dug up by nurseries and garden centers and stored in cool storage, which is not ideal for the roses.

How to plant roses correctly

The following should be carefully considered: If the roses were purchased bare-rooted, they should be placed in a bucket of water for a few hours, with the roots submerged. This allows them to soak up water, and the water level should reach up to the grafting point. Approximately 8 hours is ideal. For roses bought in containers, it is also beneficial to water them once again, until the root ball sinks and no more air bubbles rise.

Once the rose is watered, the shoots should be cut back to about 20 cm. However, about 5 buds should remain per shoot. The ends of the roots can also be trimmed slightly to encourage growth.

The planting hole for the rose should be dug deep enough so that the roots are not bent, meaning it should be relatively deep in the soil. It's beneficial for growth if roses haven't been planted at this spot for a while, as previous roses can cause soil fatigue. The grafting point should be 5 cm below the soil surface when planting, so that it is protected from winter sun damage.

Thorough watering is important to ensure proper contact between the roots and the soil. In the following spring, roses should also be well-watered. For winter protection, mound the rose with about 15 cm of soil. This mound should be removed in the spring after the last frosts. This way, your rose garden will be a success!
