Printing leaves on cushions – the unique decoration

Many plants have a very special leaf structure. The leaves of the Monstera are so extraordinary that the houseplant has quickly become quite a celebrity. Palms and other plants can also be found on many decorative items.

Particularly beautiful are special leaves on textiles in the living room. Cushions can be quickly transformed from plain white into a decorative cushion with a plant pattern. And it’s super simple, fast, and inexpensive.

The Right Materials

Cushions get a unique look with an extraordinary pattern. The best choice are solid-colored cushion covers, as the printed pattern should stand out later and not get lost. Depending on your interior and preferences, these can be white, black, or any other color. The covers are important because they need to be ironed later. The selection of leaves is vast. Monstera, Kentia palm, and others offer plenty of exciting patterns and structures, making them perfect for printing. You will also need fabric paint in your desired color, a paintbrush, and an iron.

Printing Leaves on Cushions

First, spread the cushion flat on a table. Wrinkles in the cushion cover can create unattractive gaps in the pattern later on. The stems of the leaves can remain intact, allowing you to easily place and remove the leaf from the cushion without getting your fingers dirty. Depending on your preference, you can print different leaves on one cushion. Next, generously apply fabric paint to the leaves on a separate surface. It’s best to paint the top side of the leaves, as this is usually where the structure looks most beautiful. Then, place the painted side of the leaves onto the cushion and press them down firmly. You can use more or less paint depending on how bold or subtle you want the leaf pattern to appear on the cushion.

To Make the Cushions Last

If you want to enjoy your leaf cushions for a long time, let them dry thoroughly first. Depending on the treatment required for the fabric paint after application, follow the instructions on the paint packaging. Some paints need to be ironed for at least 5 minutes to be properly set into the fabric. If desired, you can then wash the cushions inside out by hand. While many fabric paints are suitable for machine washing, if you want your new cushions to last a long time, hand washing is a good option. Afterward, the cushion covers can be filled and placed in their new spot in the home.
