Colorful Felt Acorns – Autumn Decor in a Different Way

Autumn brings so many creative crafting ideas. No other season offers so many natural products that can be used in so many ways. And autumn decor doesn’t always have to be made of chestnuts and acorns.

How about colorful felt acorns? They add a pop of color to the golden season and are super quick to make. Plus, they’re guaranteed not to be found in everyone’s autumn decor in front of their door!

Small colorful acorns

Autumn decoration usually consists of acorns, chestnuts, and pinecones. Why not? These items can be easily collected during a cozy walk in the forest and look simply great. But with a little creativity, you can also craft beautiful autumn decor that no one else has. To make the colorful felt acorns, you’ll need felt wool, acorn caps, soap, vinegar, and hot glue. However, before turning the felt wool into small acorns, some preparations need to be made. Fill two bowls with lukewarm water. In one of the bowls, grate some soap. Soap with olive oil content works best, but regular soap will also work. In the other bowl, add a splash of vinegar.

Felting, twisting, drying

Once the bowls are prepared, a piece of felt wool can be torn off. It is then dipped into the soapy water and thoroughly soaked. After removing the felt wool, wring it out and twist it between both hands until a small ball forms. Next, take a new piece of felt wool, dip it into the water, and wrap it around the small felt ball. Repeat this process until the felt ball reaches the size of a regular acorn. The wool should remain wet while felting so that the fibers bind well together. If the felt wool becomes too dry, small cracks may form in the felt acorn. However, these can be easily covered with a new piece of felt wool and felted over. Once the felt acorn is properly shaped, place it into the vinegar water to rinse out the soap.

From balls to little acorns

Since the small felt balls don’t yet resemble real acorns, they’re missing an important accessory—an acorn cap! No good outfit is complete without a hat, so the little felt acorns will now get their characteristic acorn cap. Before attaching the caps, however, the felt acorns need to dry thoroughly so that the glue will hold. This is best done overnight, near a heater. Then the puzzle begins. Once enough acorn caps have been collected in the forest, you can choose the right size and glue the felt acorn into the cap with hot glue or all-purpose glue. These small colorful felt acorns also make a lovely addition to a shrub or as a little gift in a fall-themed present.
