Planting Flower Bulbs in a Container

A beautifully decorated balcony creates a pleasant living atmosphere. With flower bulbs in a container, you can create beautiful seas of flowers in a balcony box or on the terrace.

Flower bulbs belong in every flower bed. But why not decorate the balcony or terrace with flower bulbs in a container? If you want to plant flower bulbs in a container, there are a few special considerations to keep in mind. But the vibrant display of colors will amaze you!

Flower bulbs in containers – the specifics

Some plants feel uncomfortable in large areas, while others cannot thrive in confined spaces. When planting flower bulbs in a container, you need to make sure the selected plants are suitable for indoor spaces or balconies. Some plants develop such large root systems that they won't have enough space in a pot or balcony box to grow properly. Additionally, the correct location is important. Many bulb flowers love the sun, but some prefer partial or even full shade. Naturally, these should not be placed on a south-facing balcony.

Planting time for flower bulbs

Depending on their blooming time, flower bulbs are planted at different times. First, you need to determine which plants are suitable for containers and which ones you like. Suitable plants include tulips, begonias, dahlias, and daffodils. The correct planting time depends on your selection. Winter-hardy bulbs that bloom in spring are planted in the previous fall. These can overwinter in pots on the balcony. This gives the bulbs the cold stimulus they need to form their blooms. Typical flower bulbs planted in the fall include tulips, daffodils, and ornamental onions. Flowers for late summer or fall are planted in spring. From March to May, you can plant perennial and frost-hardy plants such as poppies, nasturtiums, or sweet peas. At the same time, you can also plant perennials. If spring is particularly cold, it is advisable to delay planting frost-sensitive plants.

How to plant flower bulbs correctly

Flower bulbs are typically planted two to three times as deep as the height of the bulb. This depth ensures that the plants have good stability in the pot. For example, when planting tulips, you should aim for a planting depth of at least 10 centimeters. Without this depth, the heavy bloom of the plant might affect its stability due to its height. To plant the bulb, dig a hole, place the bulb with the pointed end facing up, and cover the hole with soil. Press the soil down to ensure the bulb has good contact with the soil. You can enhance this contact by giving the bulb a good watering at the end. Be careful not to create waterlogging. However, if the weather is particularly dry, make sure to water the plants regularly.
