Everything from the start – creating a flower bed

Garden design is an exciting task. Whether you've just acquired a garden or simply want to make a fresh start, a flower bed is a must. And creating one is not as difficult as it seems.

A flower bed truly completes a garden. The design possibilities are endless. Shape, size, and planting can vary greatly, but the most important thing is that it reflects personal taste.

A plan is needed.

Before creating the flower bed, a plan should be made. It starts with choosing the right location. Ideally, the new flower bed should be partly in the sun and partly in partial shade. If there's a rain barrel or a water connection nearby, the location for the new flower bed is perfect. A nearby water source makes watering easier, which is especially important in the summer. Depending on the location where the new flower bed is to be created, the plants are then selected. The more different types of plants are planted, the more exciting the new flower bed will be. The right choice of plants can also make gardening easier and reduce the amount of work required.

Who gets to move into the flower bed?

If you want to enjoy your new flower bed for as long as possible, you should definitely include long-blooming plants. These include many perennials that provide color in the garden throughout the summer. Notable examples are steppe sage, black-eyed Susan, and flame flower. Pretty ornamental grasses such as Chinese reed, bottlebrush grass, or evergreen species like sedge also fit in well. And, of course, the queen of plants, the rose, should not be missing from the flower bed. Shrub and small rose varieties bloom until the first frost, and many types bloom twice a year. In the spring, the flower bed shines with early bloomers like daffodils, tulips, and more, bringing the first color to the garden as early as February. These are then replaced by the first perennials in April.

Creating a Flower Bed

Creating the flower bed is not difficult at all. The important thing is to first mark out the flower bed with stones to keep track of its size. Then comes the digging. It's best to start by using a spade to outline the edges and then turn over the soil with a shovel. If there is grass in the desired area, it should be removed first. Then, use a rake to level the bed and remove larger stones or roots. Be sure to watch out for slugs and other pests and remove them immediately. Earthworms can stay, as they naturally loosen the soil. Once the flower bed is mixed with compost, it's ready for the flowers and can be designed.
