The Mini Pond – A Small Pond, Big Impact

A pond in the garden provides relaxation and a break from daily life. Watching the fish in the small ecosystem can provide hours of enjoyment and a balance to the often stressful everyday routine. But what if there isn’t enough space in the garden?

A mini pond offers everything its larger counterpart does – just in a smaller size. The mini pond is even suitable for balcony owners, so no one has to miss out on the luxury of having a pond.

A Pond for Small Spaces

A mini pond offers the opportunity to have a pond even in the smallest spaces. Whether on a balcony, terrace, or even in the living room, a mini pond can fit anywhere. The central element of the mini pond is the container in which the pond life takes place. It can either stand freely or be integrated into the garden or terrace. The container for the mini pond should be large enough to hold at least two plant baskets. This ensures that the pond can maintain itself better and prevents it from becoming a gathering spot for algae. A container that is wider at the top helps hold the plant baskets securely and provides enough space for floating plants to spread out optimally. Before setting up the mini pond, it is essential to ensure that the surface it will sit on is stable enough to support the amount of water the small pond will hold. Once the container and location are chosen, the mini pond can be set up and filled. There are a few things to consider in the process.

Small Pond, Big Impact

To ensure the plant baskets remain stable in the mini pond, the bottom of the container is filled with pebbles. The plant baskets are then placed in and secured with more pebbles. This prevents the plant baskets from floating away and keeps them from drifting to the surface. It's important to ensure that the roots of the plants are free of soil. The more nutrients that enter the mini pond, the harder it becomes for the small ecosystem to maintain the ecological balance necessary for the pond to care for itself. For this reason, a fish population should be avoided in a mini pond. First, to prevent the pond from becoming unbalanced, and second, because a small pond doesn't provide enough space for the fish to have a proper living environment. Fish are better suited for larger ponds, like a garden pond. Life comes to the mini pond through the planting. Small and narrow-leaved plants, such as iris, arrowhead, and reed grass, are ideal for planting in a mini pond, and the owner can keep them as small as possible. On the water's surface, depending on the size of the mini pond, plants like water lettuce, water hyacinth, or duckweed add color and float happily on the pond.

Ready, Set, Mini-Pond!

Once the bottom plants are planted in their baskets, it's time to fill the pond with water. It's important to ensure that as little disturbance as possible is created. To avoid murky water, the water pressure should be kept as low as possible during the filling process. Once the mini pond is filled with water, the floating plants can be placed on the surface. For those who wish, the pond can be further decorated with floating islands, a bridge, or lighting. Just like with a garden pond, there are no limits to creativity. Anything that pleases the eye is allowed. After all, the mini pond is meant for relaxation. To ensure the little pond really provides relaxation and doesn't require too much maintenance, it’s a good idea to install a pump. The pump not only creates small water features, such as a fountain, but it also ensures that the water moves. This significantly reduces algae growth, and every pond owner knows what that means: the fewer algae, the less work. This way, you can lean back near the mini pond and enjoy the view. A mini pond really is charming!
