Fertilizer for Summer Flowers – The Extra Boost for Growth

Summer flowers are incredibly beautiful to look at. However, many summer flowers are not known for their longevity. They bloom in the most beautiful shapes and colors for one summer and then are removed from the garden.

For one summer, the goal is for the summer flowers to bloom as beautifully, large, and abundantly as possible. Therefore, it is important to support the summer flowers with fertilizer during this time to help them grow as large as possible.

Fertilizer for Summer Flowers

Just as diverse as summer flowers themselves are the various ways to fertilize them. But what's important for every summer flower is the soil. It already contains a certain amount of fertilizer from the garden center, which helps the summer flowers adjust to the bed. Additional nutrients provided by the fertilizer make the flowers more resilient and ensure a summer full of blooms. However, it’s crucial that the fertilizer suits the specific type of summer flower. Not all fertilizers are the same, and not every garden soil requires the same type of fertilizer. It’s important to carefully research the topic and analyze the garden soil beforehand to avoid over-fertilizing.

Fertilizer is not just fertilizer

When it comes to fertilizer, there is a distinction between organic and mineral fertilizers. Unlike organic fertilizers, mineral fertilizers are made from inorganic substances. They mainly consist of water-soluble salts that are industrially produced. Mineral fertilizers are often applied as liquid fertilizers and can be directly absorbed by plants. Organic fertilizers, on the other hand, are made from plant and animal raw materials. The advantage of organic fertilizers is that over-fertilization is almost impossible. Additionally, organic fertilizers do not harm the organisms living in the soil and have a natural long-term effect. The number one organic fertilizer is compost. However, it should be worked into the soil in spring and doesn't provide as much benefit later on.

Household Alternatives

As with many other things, there are some home remedies for fertilizing summer flowers. But it's not just summer flowers that benefit from coffee grounds, banana peels, and the like. If you boiled eggs for breakfast on Sunday morning, you can let the water cool down and use it to water the flowers. The minerals dissolved in the water act as fertilizer. The same applies to water from boiling potatoes. For the truly dedicated hobby gardeners: finger and toenails are a good substitute for horn shavings and can be worked into the soil. Of course, this is a matter of personal preference.
