The Deodar cedar (Cedrus deodara) is a tree that grows conical, overhanging and usually reaches a height of about 15 metres and a width of about 10 metres. Its leaves are blue-green in colour. This shrub is well tolerant of frost. It prefers well-drained, humus-rich, nutrient-rich, acidic, moist to wet soil in a sunny to semi-shady, wind-protected location.

Deodar cedar is a conical and overhanging tree. It usually reaches a height of 10 - 15 m and is approx. 6 - 10 m wide. As a rule, it grows 20 - 30 cm per year.

Leaves

The Deodar cedar is evergreen. Its needles are blue-green, soft.

Bark

Grey bark makes this plant an eye-catcher in any garden.

Fruit

Red-brown, oval cones.

Root

Cedrus deodara is a shallow-rooting plant and, depending on the soil, forms roots close to the surface.

Location

Preferred location in a sunny to semi-shady, wind-protected position.

Frost hardiness

The Deodar cedar has good frost hardiness.

Soil

Cedrus deodara thrives on all acidic, humus-rich and sufficiently moist soils.

The plant has a medium water requirement.

Care

- This plant is susceptible to snow pressure. In snowy areas, it is therefore advisable to wrap the branches with string. Otherwise, they may split apart and not fully recover. When the snow season is over, the twine must of course be removed.
- This plant should not be pruned. Only broken or diseased branches should be removed in summer.

Planting time

Container plants can be planted all year round, except when the soil is frozen and in summer heat (over 30°C).
