Plant of the Month February 2025: Parrotia persica (Persian Ironwood Tree)

Parrotia persica, also known as the Persian ironwood tree or iron tree, is a fascinating plant that impresses with its impressive display of colors in spring and autumn. This plant is characterized by its bright yellow to scarlet leaves in autumn and is therefore a real highlight in every garden. The Persian Ironwood tree was chosen as the Plant of the Month for February due to its unique winter characteristics and early flowering. Although many plants lose their colors in winter, the leaves of the Persian ironwood tree retain their bright colors well into late fall.

History and origins:

The Persian ironwood tree originally comes from the Middle East and grows there in moist lowland forests. The name “ironwood tree” is derived from the hard and heavy type of wood that even sinks in water. The botanical name "Parrotia" honors the German doctor and botanist Friedrich W. Parrot, while "persica" refers to the natural distribution of the tree in Persia.
