Bamboo Care

Bamboo is generally quite easy to care for. However, since it tends to spread uncontrollably, there are a few important tips to keep in mind.

Soil Requirements

Bamboo has a high nutrient demand, which is why the use of appropriate bamboo substrate is recommended. In any case, bamboo should be fertilized twice a year with a nitrogen-rich and low-salt special fertilizer. The fertilization should take place in spring and late summer. A good water supply must be ensured to promote healthy growth.

Winter Protection

If an evergreen bamboo is to overwinter outdoors, it is recommended to cover the foliage with fleece. Special covers are available for this purpose. Otherwise, both frost and winter sun can cause damage. If the bamboo is in a pot, the roots should also be protected. A coconut mat works well for this. Additionally, tying up is recommended for bamboo plants as well as other grasses and perennials that remain tall over the winter.

Keeping Things Organized

When planting bamboo outside of containers, rhizome barriers are recommended to prevent the bamboo from eventually overtaking the entire garden. These barriers can be made of plastic, which should be relatively thick and sturdy. They can be adjusted as needed to shape the hedge in a specific way.
By the way, if you have bamboo in your garden, the woody stems can be put to good use. If harvested in autumn and dried over the winter, they can be used for various decorative purposes the following year. Additionally, they can also be used to tie up other plants.
