The Vegetable Garden – Neither Tacky nor Boring

Who doesn’t dream of having fresh, seasonal vegetables on their plate all year round? And when it comes from your own garden, it tastes even better. With a vegetable garden, this is possible!

A vegetable garden often gets a bad reputation for being tacky and boring. But it doesn’t have to be that way! When set up properly, the vegetables really shine and look neither outdated nor dull.

**A Matter of Design**

As with many other things, the design of a vegetable garden is key. This depends primarily on how the garden is laid out, how large it is, and what areas it offers. Is the garden shaded or in the sun? Does it need shaded spots, or is it partially shaded? These are all questions that need to be answered in the planning phase. If you want to create your vegetable garden far from traditional farming methods, you can use some simple but clever design ideas. How about a raised bed? Not only does it look especially attractive when built by hand, but it also guarantees a rich harvest. Special stones or natural stones as border material also add a unique charm to the vegetable garden. The possibilities for creativity are endless.

**A Plan for the Vegetable Garden**

Of course, you can simply start planting without much thought, but in most cases, that’s not the best idea. It’s important to make a rough plan beforehand about how the vegetable garden should look so that it doesn’t end up looking outdated or boring. The key is to give the garden a clear structure. A framed garden, for example, has a very calming effect. This can be achieved in a vegetable garden either by adding fruit trees or by framing the garden with raised beds. These beds suit almost all types of vegetables and produce plenty of fruits. Depending on the needs of different vegetables, the garden can be divided into various zones. Individual beds look much more dynamic than a large plot of land. And if desired, the vegetable garden can also be complemented with some ornamental plants—because they’re allowed too!

**Fruit in the Vegetable Garden? Yes, please!**

Even though the name suggests otherwise, fruit trees, berry bushes, and other treats can certainly be planted in a vegetable garden. For example, the individual beds can be beautifully framed with berry bushes, which in turn provide shady spots for vegetables that don’t thrive in full sun. The same applies to fruit trees, which, once they’ve grown large enough, make perfect shade providers. Their canopies allow light through but block direct sunlight, making them ideal ecological sunshades for the vegetable garden. A cozy lounge placed under an apple tree can turn the vegetable garden into a relaxation and retreat space for both adults and children. And, as a bonus, you can snack while you unwind. Is there anything better?
