Planting Trees – How to Make Your Garden Bigger

If you want to redesign your garden, spring is the best time to make your plans. Spring, alongside autumn, is the best season to plant trees. So, grab your spade and give your garden new life!

When winter is over, temperatures warm up, and nature begins to bloom again, it’s time to think about garden planning. Should a new fruit tree be planted in the garden to provide delicious snacks? Or would you prefer a green privacy screen to shield against the curious eyes of your neighbors?

Preparation for New Trees

The selection of the planting site in the garden depends entirely on which trees are to be planted. When choosing new garden residents from a specialist retailer, it's important to get advice beforehand on what the trees like and dislike. This will also determine the planting distance from other plants in the garden. In spring, not all the plants of the new gardening year will have emerged yet, so when planning, it’s important to consider where, in the summer, other plants will emerge from the soil. Once the right spot is found, use a spade to mark the planting hole. The hole should be larger than the root ball of the trees. Then, dig the hole deep enough so that the top of the root ball of the trees is level with the surface of the soil.

Trees Need Support

The soil removed from the planting hole is best collected in a wheelbarrow. Here, the soil can be mixed with compost and horn shavings. This not only ensures good aeration and water retention in the soil, but the horn shavings also act as fertilizer. It's a real energy boost for freshly planted trees in spring. To ensure the trees can grow well in their new location, a support stake is driven into the planting hole. This is best done with a hammer to ensure the stake stands firmly in the ground and can support the trees in the garden. The support stake should be placed on the side of the hole from which the wind typically comes. This prevents the newly planted trees from growing crooked due to the wind.

A New Spot in the Garden

Once all preparations are made, the trees can be placed in their new spot. To do this, the tree, along with its root ball, is rolled into the new hole, and the cloth around the ball is pulled down to the bottom. Then, the planting hole can be filled with the soil mixture from the wheelbarrow. To help the trees establish well and ensure the roots make good contact with the soil, the earth around the trees is firmly tamped down. Next, a rope is tied in a crisscross pattern around the trunk and support stake. Care should be taken to ensure the trees are not pulled in one direction by the rope but are standing straight. Once the new trees are standing upright, a watering edge is formed around the trunk, and the trees are thoroughly watered.
