The herb garden in May

Many garden owners create their own herb garden. Even on terraces and balconies, these useful plants can be found. No wonder: in addition to their aroma, the delicate plants impress with an elegant appearance and a pleasant fragrance.

Tarragon – the unknown herb

Tarragon receives little attention in German cuisine. In French cuisine, however, it is a MUST. The plant has a spicy anise flavor and is used in fish and poultry dishes. Numerous different varieties provide variety. May is the optimal planting time for tarragon.

Lemon balm exudes a fresh scent

Lemon balm has the pleasant ability to propagate itself. In May, it's time to cut the shoots just above the ground to prevent the new seeds from ripening. This helps the bush maintain a nice, compact shape. Lemon balm can also be used to make soothing teas for the stomach.

Proper care for Mediterranean herbs

Many Mediterranean herbs are actually shrubs because they become woody. This includes sage, thyme, and lavender. Since a compact growth is desirable for balconies and terraces, these herbs are also pruned in May. The timing is not arbitrary; pruning should only take place once the new shoots are visible. It's important that the shoot below the cutting point still has vital buds, otherwise, it won't sprout again at that spot.

Herbs between sidewalk tiles and steps

A good place for herbs are stairs or tiles in the garden. In the joints, herbs from the south thrive particularly well, as they receive enough water and warmth here. An alternative is shelves or tables placed on the south side of the house. Herbs love heat and sun. Additionally, they need well-drained soil to grow well. For those who are not lucky with sowing herbs, young plants can also be purchased in many garden centers and hardware stores in May.
