The Carolina allspice (Calycanthus floridus) is an upright shrub that produces dark red flowers with a strong fragrance. They appear from June to July. The Carolina allspice also has shiny, lanceolate, medium green leaves. Its bark is green-brown in colour. In a sunny to semi-shady, wind-protected location with well-drained, nutrient-rich soil, it usually reaches a height of approx. 3 metres and grows to a width of approx. 2 metres.

Carolina allspice is an upright-growing shrub. It usually reaches a height of 2 - 3 m and is approx. 1.5 - 2 m wide.

Shoots

The shoots of Calycanthus floridus are tomentose.

Leaves

The deciduous leaves of Carolina allspice are medium green, lanceolate, glossy, opposite. They are about 7 - 12 cm tall. Carolina allspice turns bright yellow in autumn.

Bark

Green-brown bark makes this plant an eye-catcher in any garden.

Flower

The dark red flowers appear from June to July. They are strongly scented.

Location

Preferred location in a sunny to semi-shady, wind-protected position.

Frost hardiness

The Carolina allspice has good frost hardiness.

Care

- Pruning and sawing wounds and broken branches should be treated with a wound sealant as soon as possible to prevent pathogens from entering the plant.
- A slow-release fertiliser can be used in spring. This releases the nutrients slowly and continuously so that the plant is evenly supplied over a longer period of time.

Planting time

Container plants can be planted all year round, except when the soil is frozen and in summer heat (over 30°C).
