The Dutchman´s pipe (Aristolochia macrophylla) is a dense, climbing deciduous plant that produces red-brown flowers. They appear from June to August. The Dutchman´s pipe also has heart-shaped, dark green leaves. In a semi-shady to shady location with well-drained, nutrient-rich soil, it usually reaches a height of around 10 metres and grows to around 6 metres wide.

Growth

Dutchman´s pipe is a densely growing climber which can reach a height of 8 - 10 m and a width of 2 - 6 m. It usually grows 1 - 1.5 m per year.

Shoots

The shoots of Aristolochia macrophylla are smooth and green.

Leaves

The deciduous leaves of Dutchman´s pipe are dark green, heart-shaped, alternate. They are about 20 - 30 cm tall. Long adherent.

Bark

Green, smooth bark makes this plant an eye-catcher in any garden.

Flower

The red-brown flowers appear from June to August. These grow to around 6 - 8 cm in size.

Few branches.

Location

Preferred location in semi-shady to shady position.

Frost hardiness

The Dutchman´s pipe has good frost hardiness.

Water regularly and allow the soil to dry out in the meantime.

Care

In general, stable wooden structures can be recommended as climbing aids on house walls and façades. However, there are plants that prefer slightly twisted, parallel wire ropes as climbing aids.

Container plants can be planted all year round, except when the soil is frozen and in summer heat (over 30°C).
