The Common bearberry (Arctostaphylos uva-ursi) is a mat-forming dwarf shrub with decorative, scarlet-red fruits that keep for a very long time. It produces light pink, bell-shaped flowers arranged in clusters from April to May. The Common bearberry also has leathery, egg-shaped, dark green leaves. In a sunny to semi-shady location with well-drained, nutrient-rich soil, it usually reaches a height of approx. 25 cm and grows to a width of approx. 2 metres.

Growth

Common bearberry is a mat-forming dwarf shrub. It usually reaches a height of 15 - 25 cm and is approx. 1 - 2 m wide.

Leaves

The evergreen leaves of the Common bearberry are dark green, ovate, leathery and alternate. They are about 1 - 3 cm in size.

Bark

Red-brown, flaking bark makes this plant an eye-catcher in any garden.

Flower

The light pink, bell-shaped flowers of Common bearberry appear in clusters from April to May.

Fruit

The scarlet-red fruits of Arctostaphylos uva-ursi are particularly decorative. These appear from August. Cling for a very long time.

Location

Preferred location in a sunny to semi-shady position.
