The Japanese barberry 'Atropurpurea' (Berberis thunbergii) is a dense, overhanging, branched shrub with decorative, coral-red, oval fruits that stay on for a very long time. These are small. It produces yellow-red flowers in May. The Japanese barberry 'Atropurpurea' also has egg-shaped, dark red leaves. In a sunny to semi-shady location with well-drained, humus-rich, acidic soil, it usually reaches a height of around 3 metres and grows to a width of around 1.2 metres.

Japanese barberry 'Atropurpurea' is a dense, overhanging and branching shrub. It usually reaches a height of 2 - 3 m and is approx. 0.8 - 1.2 m wide. It usually grows 30 - 40 cm per year.

Shoots

The shoots of Berberis thunbergii 'Atropurpurea' are spiny.

Leaves

High leaf ornamental value. The deciduous leaves of the Japanese barberry 'Atropurpurea' are dark red, ovate and alternate. They are about 3 - 4 cm in size. Japanese barberry 'Atropurpurea' turns bright crimson in autumn.

Bark

Flower

The yellow-red flowers appear in May.
