The Wintergreen barberry (Berberis julianae) is an upright, dense, overhanging shrub with decorative, black-blue fruits. It produces yellow flowers arranged in panicles from May to June. The Wintergreen barberry also has leathery, egg-shaped, dark green leaves. In a sunny to semi-shady location with well-drained, nutrient-rich soil, it usually reaches a height of around 3 metres and grows to a width of around 4 metres.

Growth

Wintergreen barberry is an upright, dense and overhanging shrub. It usually reaches a height of 2 - 3 m and is approx. 2 - 4 m wide.

Shoots

The shoots of Berberis julianae are spiny, brown-yellow in colour.

Leaves

The evergreen leaves of the Wintergreen barberry are dark green, ovate, leathery, alternate, toothed. They are about 8 - 10 cm tall.

Flower

The yellow flowers of the Wintergreen barberry appear in panicles from May to June.

Fruit

The black-blue fruits of Berberis julianae are particularly decorative. These appear from August.

Root

Berberis julianae is a shallow-rooted or deep-rooted plant and, depending on the soil, forms sparsely branched roots.

Location

Preferred location in a sunny to semi-shady position.

Frost hardiness

The Wintergreen barberry has good frost hardiness.

The plant has a medium water requirement.

Care

A slow-release fertiliser can be used in spring. This releases the nutrients slowly and continuously so that the plant is evenly supplied over a longer period of time.
