The Barberry (Berberis candidula) is a compact, roundish dwarf shrub that produces yellow or golden-yellow, bell-shaped flowers. They appear in May. The Barberry also has shiny, egg-shaped, dark green leaves. Its bark is light yellow in colour. In a sunny to semi-shady location, it usually reaches a height of approx. 1.2 metres and grows to a width of approx. 1.6 metres. The Barberry makes no special demands on the soil.

The shoots of Berberis candidula are spiny.

Leaves

The evergreen leaves of Barberry are dark green, ovate, glossy, alternate, toothed. They are about 2 - 3 cm in size. Barberry turns bright orange-red in autumn.

Bark

Light yellow bark makes this plant an eye-catcher in any garden.

Flower

The yellow, golden-yellow, bell-shaped flowers appear in May.
