The Painted fern 'Metallicum' (Athyrium niponicum) is a decorative design element in the garden with its shiny, feathery, silver-grey leaf fronds. The purple-red leaf stalks are an interesting detail. It feels most at home in a semi-shady location with soil that is as well-drained and lime-free as possible. In favourable conditions, this hardy fern reaches a height of approx. 40 cm and grows up to 60 cm wide.
