The Sweet chestnut (Castanea sativa) is a sprawling large tree that produces creamy white flowers with a strong fragrance. They appear from June to July. Brown fruits emerge from these from October. They exude a strong fragrance. The Sweet chestnut also has shiny, lanceolate, dark green leaves. Its bark is dark grey and fissured like a net. In a sunny to semi-shady location with well-drained, nutrient-rich, acidic soil, it usually reaches a height of around 30 metres and grows to a width of around 15 metres.

Southern Europe to North Africa.

Growth

Sweet chestnut is a sprawling large tree. It usually reaches a height of 15 - 30 m and is approx. 10 - 15 m wide. As a rule, it grows 40 - 60 cm per year.

Shoots

The shoots of Castanea sativa are red-brown in colour.

Leaves

The deciduous leaves of Sweet chestnut are dark green, lanceolate, glossy, alternate, serrated. Sweet chestnut turns a bright golden yellow in autumn.

Bark

Dark grey, net-like torn bark makes this plant an eye-catcher in any garden.

Flower

The creamy white flowers appear from June to July. They are strongly scented.

Fruit

Castanea sativa forms brown fruits with a mealy flavour. The skin of the fruit is prickly. Ripening time from October.

Root

Castanea sativa is a deep rooter.

Location

Preferred location in a sunny to semi-shady position.

Frost hardiness

The Sweet chestnut has good frost hardiness.
