The Alder (Alnus spaethii) is a broad, pyramidal tree that produces brown-yellow flowers. They appear from February to March. The Alder also has leathery, lanceolate, dark green leaves. Its bark is grey and longitudinally furrowed. In a sunny to semi-shady location, it usually reaches a height of around 18 metres and grows to a width of around 10 metres. The Alder makes no special demands on the soil.

Growth

Alder is a broad and pyramidal growing tree with a loose crown. It usually reaches a height of 12 - 18 m and is approx. 7 - 10 m wide. As a rule, it grows 40 - 50 cm per year.

Leaves

The deciduous leaves of the Alder are dark green, lanceolate, leathery. They are about 6 - 16 cm in size. Long adherent.

Bark

Grey, longitudinally furrowed bark makes this plant an eye-catcher in any garden.

Flower

The brown-yellow flowers appear from February to March.

Fruit

Cones. The young cones have a brown-yellow colour.

Location

Preferred location in a sunny to semi-shady position.

Frost hardiness

The Alder has good frost hardiness.

Cut and saw wounds as well as broken branches should be treated with a wound dressing as soon as possible to prevent pathogens from entering the plant.
